The Alamo Colleges serve the Bexar County community through their programs and services that help students succeed in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed in today's world. Northwest Vista College
Northwest Vista College began offering classes in the fall of 1995 as one of the newest additions to the Alamo Colleges. Classes were held at the Northside Independent School District and at partner corporation sites. Our enrollment that first semester was 12 students. Currently there are nearly 12,000 students taking courses at Northwest Vista College and several off-site locations in a traditional daytime classroom setting as well as evening, Internet, hybrid and weekend courses. Most of the programs offered lead to a two-year associate degree or one-year certificate option. Most recently Northwest Vista college opened four new buildings; Juniper Hall, Red Bud Learning Center, Cypress Campus Center and Live Oak Hall. The University is one of the many outgrowths of the original mission that brought the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word to San Antonio in 1869. The Sisters’ work began with the care of victims of a cholera epidemic and the establishment of the first hospital in the city, an institution recognized today as the Christus Santa Rosa Health Care Corporation. Their ministry soon spread to the care of homeless children and teaching. In 1881, they secured a charter from the State of Texas, which empowered them to establish schools on all levels. St. Mary’s University St. Mary's University, founded in 1852 by Marianist brothers and priests, is the first institution of higher learning in San Antonio and the oldest Catholic university in Texas and the Southwest. Personal attention and powerful academic programs have made St. Mary's, located on 135 acres northwest of downtown San Antonio, a nationally recognized liberal arts institution. With a diverse student population of nearly 4,000 of all faiths and backgrounds, St. Mary's is home to five schools: Humanities and Social Sciences, Bill Greehey School of Business, Science, Engineering and Technology, Graduate, and Law.
